North Georgia College & State University Cuts Ribbon on New Bookstore and Signature Dining Facility

North Georgia College & State University, located in Dahlonega, Ga. recently celebrated the opening of two new state-of-the-art facilities on their campus. The new Chestatee Building, a 47,925 sq. ft. mixed-use facility, and the new 1,215 seat dining hall will fill the needs of various auxiliary functions including a bookstore, Woodward Student Health Services, campus offices, general dining space as well as banquet hall seating.

The two facilities were developed through a turnkey design-build contract between RISE and the state of Georgia and funded through tax-exempt bonds.

North Georgia College & State University is a 5,300 student, four-year institution nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. The state’s second-oldest university, NGCSU is one of only six senior military colleges in the United States and has been deemed as the Military College of Georgia.

The Chestatee Building, located just one block from Dahlonega’s town square, houses a 15,700 sq. ft. campus bookstore (Campus Connection), Starbucks coffee shop with reading lounge and balcony patio, office space, student health center and approximately 6,000 sq. ft. of street-front leasable retail. A 16-screen digital display was installed above the bookstore lobby and is used to display school and sports announcements as well as advertising. Completed in just eight months, the building features a split-level foundation that embraces the site’s challenging topography and provides a seamless connection of the university to the downtown area.

Designed to be the “signature” facility on campus, the newly completed dining hall features 38,680 sq. ft. of space for general dining, banquet events and a conference room available for private dining. The roof is designed to create a pedestrian plaza extending out from the level of the street above to accommodate outdoor gatherings. Special attention was given to the design so that all the spaces offer spectacular views over the iconic military drill field located in the center of campus.

Fully integrated with the NGCSU Campus Master Plan design and principles, the new Chestatee building and dining hall provide functional aesthetic harmony with the flexibility for future campus growth.

The development team was led by RISE. In addition, RISE recently led the successful development, construction and completion of Patriot Hall, a 352 beds of new cadet housing, North Georgia Suites, a 604-bed civilian housing community, and a 1,080 space parking deck. Their partnership with NGCSU will continue through Fall 2012 upon completion of Liberty Hall, a 264-bed new residence hall, and Gaillard Hall, a cadet barrack renovation that will provide 166 suite-style beds.
